Take a look at the new design for the 2006 five cent piece. The reverse is going back to the traditional Monticello engraving but there’s a new portrait of a forward-looking (rather than portrait-style) Thomas Jefferson.
In unveiling the design Tuesday, Mint officials said they believed the new image of Jefferson is an appropriate way to commemorate his support for expanding the country through the Louisiana Purchase and sending Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the territory in 1804-05.
It seems like it was just yesterday that 2005’s nickel design was introduced.
Here’s the press release from the U.S. Mint.

Seems like we just had a new nickel design. I think I like this one better, though. It has a more solid feel than the “arcade token” nickel they last gave us.
