The reason the state quarters, and now the nickels, have been successful is because people see them in their change. Non-circulating issues will just be something a few collectors will buy. I've been to both dolarized economies and a $1 bill is an extreme rarity while a $1 coin is the norm. Quite simply, other dollar economies had a higher demand for the coins than the US did (places where they use more real money and less checks, credit, and debit) and the coins all found their way down south. However, an oft overlooked downside to dollar coins is that it must make going to strip clubs much more difficult. You could knock a girl out if you tossed one of those things too hard.
