Listen up, Suze has something to say. Suze Orman has a pretty good column up at Yahoo Finance, and that means a lot coming from me. I’m often critical of Suze’s attitude, voice, and sometimes her advice. But this time, her thoughts ring true. In her latest column, Suze offers five signs it’s time to leave your job:
* Friday is your favorite day. Working a task-oriented job rather than a project-oriented job creates a routine, and this routine can be uninspiring for some people.
* You’re bored. If work were fun, it wouldn’t be called work, right? Well, it’s good to be involved in something that holds your interest. Sometimes, something might hold your interest at the beginning, but if there’s nothing to continually challenge and inspire, it can get boring quickly.
* Stress is your middle name. Suze speaks about stress as a required part of the job, but the truth is the more responsibility you have, the more stress results. If you want to do grea things, you’ll have to deal with a lot of stress. I don’t think excessive stress is reason enough to leave a job, unless it’s causing other health problems. Of course, different people have different levels of tolerance for stress.
* You’re underappreciated (and overworked). I don’t know anyone who is not underappreciated and overworked. After a few years of this, even after speaking up for yourself, it’s definitely time to move on.
* You keep saying, “If I could do it all over, I would be a…” There is something to be said for pursuing your passion if it’s viable. I think it’s important not to rule anything out until you’ve given it a shot.
