There is a major snowstorm headed its way to my area this weekend. I have enough food in my apartment to last me through the weekend, but I need to pick up some groceries for the week before the storm hits. That means I might have to go out tonight. Usually I’m so exhausted at the end of the week I don’t feel like doing anything Friday nights. (This must be a sign I’m getting old…)
So far this year, I think I’ve done a much better job of planning out meals and purchasing food to fit the plan. After another month, I’ll probably be able to judge whether I’m saving a significant amount of money. In addition to planning meals, I’ve also tried the local “Asian” grocery store (focusing on Korean, Japanese and Indian foods) rather than the big SuperFresh and Wegmans.
They have great prices on some things and not so wonderful prices on others. For example, pork is cheap — I’ve never been a big pork eater — but juice and sauce cost the same if not more than the big stores. I had hoped the selection of meat would have been more varied, but I did pick up a box of Pocky and a free package of doughy-nutty-cookies when the cashier checked me out.

Yes! Another vote for Asian groceries! I find that produce is typically much cheaper as well as most staples (particularly those of the asian variety: rice, soy sauce, chili pastes, etc) and sometimes they have decent prices on some really interesting frozen stuff. But I do agree, unless I lived right near one, I don’t think I’d do all my shopping there, I just concentrate on the stuff I think they’re really good at (produce, asian ingredients, froz dumplings, and of course…Pocky!)
What flavor pocky did you get? We like men’s ;) (dark chocolate)
That Super Fresh doubles coupons up to and including a $1, so sometimes the deals there can be very good.
