Looking for Apartments, Update 2

bd2.jpgHere’s another update to the saga in which my girlfriend and I look for an apartment. This is particularly difficult considering she works in Queens and I work in New Jersey. We would like to live somewhere in the middle, but we’re having a hard time finding affordable, decent apartments that are a “fair” commuting distance for both of us.

The Staten Island apartment I mentioned last week is not available, so we did not visit it this weekend. Instead, we toured an apartment in Jersey City and visited the towns between there and Fort Lee. At this point, we’ve ruled out everything except Fort Lee, Leonia, Palisades Park, and Englewood. Considering their proximity to the George Washington Bridge, these towns are much nicer than I expected.

To live in either of these towns, I’d be extending my commute by ten to fifteen minutes, and Amy would be extending hers by about an hour. Our expenses for tolls will greatly increase.

Another option is to wait a year before moving in together. I will need to search for a one-bedroom apartment, which would be considerably more expensive.

  • Learn to speak Korean, and it'll probably get you small discounts in all the Korean places around Fort Lee and Palisades Park! ;-)
  • We noticed a heavy Korean presence in the local businesses and churches. It's similar to the are of Queens where my girlfriend is from.
  • Lot's of good Korean restaurants and markets in the area. There's a great farmer's market in East Rutherford, NJ nearby where you can get fresh local produce for cheap. When I go for my produce shopping for the week, I rarely spend over $20. Much cheaper than eating out!
