New Jersey Turnpike Stories

After reading the news about hybrids being allowed in the New Jersey Turnpike’s HOV lanes, I’ve been in the mood to read more about that highway. Thankfully, a new article from the New York Times, A Dozen Roadside Attractions [free subscription], satisfies that itch and refers to the rest areas alongside the road.

The article talks about typical families stopping for a bladder break, special amenities for truckers, and a number of illegal activities that allegedly take place in those parking lots (drugs, prostitution, human trafficking, etc.).

A new bill will set out to privatize the rest areas, allowing a clear road to building hotels and other amenities. The stops are all named for famous historical New Jerseyans, including Joyce Kilmer, Walt Whitman, Molly Pitcher, and Vince Lombardi.
