When I went from hourly to management three years ago, I dropped $4000 anually. But that lasted about a year for me and then we also implemented a bonus system for the salaried employees and because I took that one year decrease, I'm now up about 15,000 from when I was hourly ($6000 from bonuses). That on top of showing the higher ups what I'm capable of it was the best decision I've ever made. Being upwardly mobile refers to responsibilities not salary, at least at first.
