Just a note on guitars: the D-series has a bit more bottom end (the "fuller" tone you heard) but the triple-o size has a balance between bass and treble that makes it desirable for certain playing styles. Lots of musicians use smaller-bodied guitars in the studio.

I just bought a laptop at Circuit City - It's a Sony with a 17" screen, 100 GB HD,a etc etc fully loaded - cost was $1049 and $200 total rebate - it seemed like a really good deal. (I know you hate rebates but you can't avoid them). Check out the Circuit City deals. And um, go for the Martin (or there are some other high end quality guitars, believe it or not) - for fun and information you can visit the Martin factory and warehouse in Bethleham PA. For purchases, Music Row in NYC is a good place to start (47th and 48th off Broadway) - you can try out what you see and maybe get some good deals. The 'Music Foundation' is very happy to hear you're diving back in to playing music!

I say you swing both. August is the best time to buy a new laptop from retail stores like Best Buy and Circuit City because of their back to school sales. As for the guitar, I purchased a black Martin Acoustic/Electric for around $600 off of www.musiciansfriend.com (which I highly recommend)! God luck with everything and congrats on the MBA.
