Today is National Get Out of Debt Day

Did you know that today, Tuesday, September 12, 2006 is “National Get Out of Debt Day?” Neither did I. Today, the National Foundation for Credit Counseling is taking questions online and over the phone… and answering those questions, free of charge.

So, who are these people answering questions, and will they be trying to sell something? Here’s a little bit about the organization:

The NFCC is a member organization consisting of credit counselors nationwide who qualify.

All NFCC member counselors must complete the NFCC’s comprehensive, quality training program to guarantee their ability to provide quality education and assistance to consumers.

Unlike for-profit credit counselors, the NFCC is funded by creditors who participate in Debt Management Plans. The NFCC will work with any creditor, regardless of whether they provide funding for the NFCC. Any money paid by a customer to a creditor through the NFCC is completely passed on to the creditor—the NFCC doesn’t take a cut.

It sounds like they are relatively unbiased and are looking out for the best interest of the customers. Here’s how you can get in touch if you’d like to ask a question today.

  • Call 866-481-6322. Counseling is free today, but if your issue requires following up with creditors, you will be charged a small fee if you can afford it.
