Did You Miss National Retirement Planning Week?

by Flexo on November 27, 2006. Uncategorized 4 comments.

While I was in California, I heard the venerable Ben Stein on the radio. (Why doesn’t he have a blog yet?) He was being interviewed for National Retirement Planning Week, which apparently started on November 13 this year and presumably ended one week later.

Ben Stein, National Retirement Planning WeekI hadn’t heard much about this event, so I tried to find some information. The organization that “sponsors” the week is the National Retirement Planning Coalition, whose only website deals directly with the Retire on Your Terms Education Program. The organization doesn’t seem to provide a wealth of material about this year’s National Retirement Planning Week, and there don’t appear to be “events,” per se.

The website provides some links to other organizations that will help people find the path to a comfortable retirement, including those that focus on insurance, savings, and financial planning.

There is a press release announcing the start of the National Retirement Planning Week, which includes several tips for both retirement savings and retirement spending.

It seems to be there was a lot of lost potential with this National Retirement Planning Week. The radio broadcast with Ben Stein “kicking off” the week wasn’t until Thanksgiving, after the official week had concluded. I didn’t see anything in the press, in the financial media or otherwise.

If properly approached, the timing would have been perfect for my mother. We spent some time reviewing her retirement investments during my short visit.

It’s a column, all right, but I wouldn’t quite call it a blog. I’d like to see frequent updates, links, etc., with Ben not necessarily speaking for Yahoo Finance.

I am an unskilled worker earning minimum wage and I expect retirement will never be an option for me. So what’s left to plan?

National Retirement Planning Week? Wow, I’m as shocked as you that this even exists! I read a TON about retirement and related issues and have never heard of it. They are DEFINITELY missing a huge opportunity with this…
