Presidential Dollar Series: I Got a Bank Teller in Trouble

This past Saturday, I stopped in at my local bank (which happens to be the much-discussed Wachovia) to see if they were distributing rolls of the newest John Adams Presidential $1 coins. I know the release date isn’t until May 17, but I had a good reason for asking early.

A few months ago, I was able to get my hands on the George Washington $1 coins before the release date simply by asking for them. The teller was unaware that the coins were sealed. The teller I spoke to this past weekend was a little more educated about the topic. She explained that they are not allowed to distribute the coins prior to the release date, and they “got in trouble” when the Washington dollars were given out beforehand.

I hope my original teller didn’t get fired.

Apparently, this time around there is a “waiting list,” on which I have been added. I will receive a call from one of the head tellers when my rolls are ready. I ordered four rolls: one to open and spend and the rest to hold in case there is a profit opportunity like errors or higher demand later on.

People who have seen the new John Adams coins say this design is much better than the Washington portrait, which was not attractive at all.

At the bank I work at we’ve had these sitting in our vault for about two weeks now. I think the mint got ticked off with all the ebayers selling the Washington’s before the official release date. Chances are your teller did not get in any trouble but the bank itself may have.

It’s May 2008 now and I am waiting for the release of John Q Adams dollar….I have 25 rolls of each previous coin. I am not opening them, I’m saving them until I have complete sets for the projected run. I’ll then add 25 rolls every time a new issue comes out. The face value of the collection will be nothing compared to the collectors value. I have two grandchildren and five greatnephews and greatnieces that will leave me 18 extra sets unless more kids pop out along the way. Great graduation and birthday gifts for the future.
