I’ve Surpassed My First Significant Milestone

If you’re an astute visitor to Consumerism Commentary (and visit the blog rather than reading the RSS feed in your own reader) you may have noticed that my net worth widget in the upper right hand corner of this page, which measures the computation I now call my modified net worth, has surpassed $100,000. At this point, I don’t expect my modified net worth to drop below six figures.

milestoneI don’t look at this as a goal; it’s more of a milestone that I pass on the way to the financial independence that is still a long way off. Still, it shows I’ve come a decent way from when I started writing Consumerism Commentary in July 2003. My modified net worth at the time was $13,255, but soon to be reduced to $4,763 after taking on debt to begin my pursuit of an MBA.

The number 100,000 is basically arbitrary. The only things that make it special are the fact that it is the first natural number with six digits and that the zeros at the end make it look nice and neat.

My next modified net worth milestones will be $250,000, $500,000, and $1,000,000. Other upcoming milestones are $0 debt and $100,000 in retirement investments.

Congratulations, Flexo! Since now you have a much stronger foundation than 4 years ago, reaching your next milestone won’t another 4 years :)

Congrats, Flexo! Milestones are such a feel good thing! The real dollar difference between $99,250 and $100,000 is not very much, but $100,000 just looks so much nicer. :)

Sun makes a nice point – your next milestone should be easier to reach. Good luck!

It’s not currently part of my wardrobe, but I’ll thinking about it next time I’m in a millinery.

This is my first time here, but I think it is awesome that you share that information with the public. My investment account seems pretty bare right now when I compare to yours. I’ll be sure to keep my eyes and ears open.
