Survey Results: What You Like (And Don’t Like) About Consumerism Commentary

About a month ago, I asked readers to answer a short survey so I could learn about this blog’s readers. It was a fun experiment, but looking back, I could have designed the survey a little better. Regardless, the survey was successful.
So far, I’ve shared who you are and your reading habits. Now I am presenting the meat of the survey — what you like to read here. Most of the results were what I expected, but there were some interesting points.
As I noted earlier, about 94% percent of the survey respondents read Consumerism Commentary a few times a month or more. The results in this post are based only on the responses of that 94%. I feel that those who read this blog less than once a month are hardly “regular readers,” and it is that set of regular readers that most interests me in these survey categories.
One section of the survey asked readers to describe their feelings towards different types of articles they’d like to read. The rating system could have been a little clearer, but here are the average ratings (on a scale of 1 to 5) for posts you may see here:
* How-to/Instructional Articles (Advanced Financial Issues): 4.10; out of these respondents, 29.0% claim this is the best feature
* Personal Experiences and Stories: 4.02; out of these respondents, 26.2% claim this is the best feature
* How-to/Instructional Articles (Basic Financial Issues): 3.84
* Personal Financial Analysis (Net Worth Reports, etc.): 3.51
* Product Reviews and Recommendations: 3.37
* Commentary on Current Events and News Stories: 3.22
* Guest Posts From Bloggers and Authors: 3.20
* Links to Other Blogs (Weekly Roundups, Carnivals, etc.): 3.17
* Links to Current Events and News Stories: 3.04
* Giveaways and Contests: 2.66
* Articles About Blogging or Other Off-Topic Posts: 2.57
The last two categories also tied for most respondents selecting “Do not like.”
These ratings fall in line with my expectations, for the most part. I struggle with the “instructional” articles because I don’t consider myself an expert, nor do I see Consumerism Commentary as an “advice-offering” blog. I still like writing this type of entry because I see them more as a challenge.
In a few days, I’ll share some comments that readers left anonymously and respond to a few of them.
