If you buy gasoline in New Jersey, you may want to avoid the gas stations listed in this article. The New Jersey Division of Consumer Affairs has fined 350 stations out of 1,025 total inspected during a recent three-day operation across the entire state. Most of the stations fined were guilty of innacurate pump calibration, providing customers with less gasoline (fewer gallons) than appear on the pump’s display.
Other violations include inaccurate octane ratings, missing registration, prices posted incorrectly and multiple price changes in a 24-hour period.

I would be very upset if I had frequented a gas station doing this. I understand the margins on gas are extremely small, but the seals on the pumps are there as a guarantee and to instill trust.
I actually have most of my gas receipts going back about a year or so. I write the mileage on the receipt and put it in an envelope to track my gas mileage. Every so often I make sure everything is normal. They would most likely be useless though because I doubt anyone could prove how long this had been going on…

If you read the report, there were 62 violations out of 1,023 for “meters out of tolerance (more than 6 cubic inches)”. Most of the other violations are just dumb.
A gallon is 231 cubic inches. Tolerance is +/- 2.6%, apparently. It doesn’t specify if the gas station was accidentally giving you more gas. Perhaps there are a few bargain stations on this list :-)

I recently stopped in Pole Tavern Exxon in woodstown NJ to get gas. I had $10 on me and asked for $10 cash. As i was waiting it seemed like the pump was running longer then ususal for $10, so i looked over and glanced at the pump to find it had just passed $30! I jumped out and shut off the pump, and the attendant comes over, and i said i asked for $10 cash, he processed to yell you said fill up you pay now!! I said i did not say fill up, i told you $10 cash. NO NO NO you said fill up you pay for it now!! Then he proceds to turn the pump back on and put more gas in!!!!!!!!!! I said what are you doing???? i told you $10 stop putting gas in!!! The guy gave me an attitued, and was condesending and almost gloating, i know he did it on purpose, and the fact he added more gas after i had already stopped it just proves it, not to mention really ticked me off.
If i did not catch the pump when i did it would of probably be $80 bucks or more to fill up. I had $10 in my pocket, if i did not have a credit card on me what was i suppsed to do? And the best part is he give me more crap when i handed him a credit card. There was a reason i told the guy i wanted ten bucks cause maybe thats what i had? Im not going there again,

hate to tell you but if your car is overpumped, it is A LAW, you still have to pay!. Law enforcement vieww this as “you eventually would of had to buy more gas” so you have to pay. I work at Getty 56250, and it has happened to me, pumps are machines,THEY HAVE FLAWS! a customer asked for 20 i set the pump, the pump overran to 40, so i told the guy he still had to pay, and he gave an attitude, so i called the police, and he was given 48 hours to bring back the difference in cash.
