Apologies to Internet Explorer Users: SiteMeter Broke Consumerism Commentary

by Flexo on August 2, 2008. Administration 7 comments.

I apologize to any users of Internet Explorer who were unable to access Consumerism Commentary for several hours on Friday. Apparently, something was wrong with some of the web statistics software I (and millions of other webmasters) was using. The service provider, SiteMeter, changed their code and caused presumably thousands of websites to be inaccessible or producing warnings for users who use Windows and Internet Explorer.

I’ve removed the broken service temporarily. While webmasters everywhere are aware of the problem, SiteMeter hasn’t published any information on the issue. For a company so involved with the web, I would have expected better communication about the problem.

Thanks to Jim from Blueprint for Financial Prosperity who was kind enough to send me a text message while I was away from the computer to let me know about the problem.

SiteMeter, when I was deciding some years ago, was the one that seemed to be the best, among the free counters.

I just found out about this, via Bill Dennis (Peoria Pundit), who linked to ‘Twitter’ postings, about Sitemeter:

That’s where I found this entry.

Thanks again for the extended info… But I wish my blogging rate was such for which something like this still mattered. :-(

:-( :-( :-(

Of late, it feels like a number software companies out there are forcing user’s hand to make the switch to FireFox sooner rather than later… This is just another example of it — and it’s driving me nuts…

But if countless IE users continue to see the “Operation aborted” error with every other site they view, well, the FireFox users won’t be in the minority for long…

The ultimate fix, sitemeter.com is the problem. If you go into your internet explorer security settings and add the following to restricted sites then the page loads.
http://*.sitemeter.com

Your welcome Flexo, btw, it was my friend Fred at http://oneprojectcloser.com who told me about it first.

Seven different procedures to fix the Sitemeter operation aborted bug:

The explanation of the cause – a javascript bug in IE7 – is included.

I wish I had found this post the other day. I couldn’t figure out what the heck was going on with my blog.
