See our update with a new code.

The bank Washington Mutual isn’t completely dead yet. Here is a new promotion code that will provide a $100 bonus for opening a new checking account. There are a few requirements in order to receive the bonus, however. You must open the account before March 28, 2009 with a minimum opening deposit of $100 (not including the bonus). If the account remains in good standing, you will receive the $100 bonus within twelve weeks after initiating the first direct deposit into the account. A monthly (or more frequent) direct deposit is necessary in order to qualify for the $100 bonus, and you have only sixty days to send the first direct deposit.

Here is the code: 2960-ADHH-5041

Enter the above code at free.wamu.com to apply for the account and earn the $100 bonus.

Thanks to Consumerism Commentary reader Yana who let me know about this new bonus. If you have tips about free money or anything else you think would interest readers, send us an email at tips at this domain name or send me a message on Twitter.

  • The cost of dealing with Chase and Washington Mutual is not worth the $100 to me. First off I've been a Chase "customer", car loan and credit card, in the past and they flat out sucked.

WaMu is even worse. A close friend had her identity stolen when WaMu mailed a replacement card to a different address based on a fake phone call "I'm on vacation and my card was stolen". She closed the account and ordered that no replacement cards were to be sent. Then they reopened the account and sent another card based on a TTD placed call without her permission. She got doubletalk from reps, called back and noone could confirm her conversations. Too much funny business to trust them with my money.

So, you'll understand why I'm going to pass on the $100. Maybe next time. Probably not.
  • Mike: That's certainly one of the worst banking experiences I've read.
  • Hmmm... I'm considering it. I currently have a student account at Bank of America, and I know they will start charging me at one point unless I set up direct deposit. My income isn't stable enough to guarantee direct deposit once a month, so I should probably look into a free checking account. And my mother has had Chase for about a bazillion years (although it wasn't Chase when she got the account) and swears by it.

I guess I have a month to think about it.

That code is apparently for one time use?

" Promo code has been used, please go to a local WaMu branch to redeem. "
  • Well, I guess we were able to help one person.
