Even though they don't always have the highest interest rate, I'm still a fan of ING Direct.  Ever since opening the account years ago (2003 I think), I've found my experience with them to be completely smooth.  I think I only called them once, back in 2003, when I forgot my user number.  The company seems to have the right kind of attitude, it almost has a community bank feel to it, even though they're huge.

Of course, I've sinced moved money around quite a bit to take advantage of higher rates elsewhere.  I don't chase rates but I want my interest income to be as high as possible. I'll always probably keep some money at ING Direct.

What's your favorite bank for savings accounts?

ING Direct is my online bank of choice.  If I could write checks manually with it, I could drop my local bank account altogether.  (The do have some online check things, but that doesn't replace what I need for various places such as my church.)  I wish their rate was back up where it used to be, but the ease of creating accounts, moving money, and such, makes them the best bank for me.  I haven't been one to chase rates, but the difference between then and FNBO makes me at least curious enough to look around.

We have ING, but I just don't have the confidence to put that much money in it.  I use Schwab Investor Checking for savings.  We have savings at Wells Fargo, just to keep the checking account free, but the interest is a joke.  I don't really care what the banks label the accounts - our simple savings are in checking accounts.

I've stuck with ING since the beginning but I did open the WaMu C/S combo (before the collapse of course) because they had a good brick-n-mortar presence in my area. :-/

We're still with ING. Our experiences at BofA made us appreciate how important customer service is.

Disappointed but not surprised. WT Direct lowered their rates today, too.

I've thought about getting an ING account many times in the past year, but for some reason, it just doesn't feel as secure.

I've had a savings account with my local credit union for almost 3 years now, and while the rates aren't as high as ING's, they are higher than other banks like Bank of America, and it feels more secure and "close by." I can make immediate internal transfers to my checking account with online banking, so I can keep my money in savings right up to the time I need to pay a bill. Plus, the minimum required balance is low at $25 and there is no limit on withdrawal, so in case of an emergency and I need to take out a large amount, I don't have to worry about penalities.
