Skype: Free Telephone Calls

This article was written by in Consumer. 6 comments.

SkypeI just received this message from Skype:

Calls to friends and family on Skype have always been free. Now we’ve made calls within the US and Canada to all phones totally free till the end of the year. Starting from today it doesn’t matter if it’s a Skype-to-Skype call or a call to landline or mobile phone – it’s free as long as you’re calling from within the US or Canada to US or Canadian phone number.

Previously, anyone with Skype, a computer program that uses a microphone and speakers to function as a phone, could call anyone who also had the software for free or pay a small amount to call someone who has only a regular telephone (land line or cell phone).

I installed and removed Skype some time ago without giving it much of a thought. This promotion may cause me to consider reinstalling the software. I can’t imagine paying for calls once the promotional period ends, however.

A while back I wrote a post about Skype, I was considering switching to it exclusively and eliminating any kind of phone bill. I don’t think it’s widely used enough yet to make that practical. But it’ll be cool when it is. Great post.

This is even more exciting when you buy a cheap USB handset that works with Skype, then it’s literally like using a regular phone through your PC. Ebay has a ton of them.

Also, there are a couple WIFI phones out there that have Skype software built in. You can use these to make free phone calls without a PC.

I deleted that email with the single thought, “Why is Skype sending me junk mail?!” I’m glad you actually read it and then posted what it said. I’m going to take advantage of this. :)
