That’s just a minimum initial deposit. It’s not a fee, so you won’t lose the $25.

I used SmartyPig about a year ago and I do not recall a $25 fee. Today I logged in to start a new goal and see this under the intial deposit: “minimum $25.00 (Will be withdrawn IMMEDIATELY from the funding source you specify below. Not considered first monthly contribution.)” Is this just to start the goal (although not the start of the monthly contributions)? I was hesitant as I had read about the previous $25 fee…

People use SmartyPig because it offers 4.3+% APY a year when ING or the like offers only 3%. Now that they’ve dropped the $25 fee on checks, SmartyPig offers one of the best interest rates in the country. People use it because they get a better return. Who doesn’t want a little extra cash?

Yeah, I don’t know why people need SmartyPig to begin with. You can do pretty much everything they offer with other web tools…for free.

Good. These few changes will make the program a lot more usable for people with any kind of goal. I don’t like getting things on cards and, as Lazy points out, they can’t be used in some situations.

If I had been able to set up my account, this was going to be something that I’d complain about before they fixed it. I like to buy things off of Craigslist since I can often save a few dollars. People on Craigslist don’t take MasterCard, so it’s great to have this option.

It’s not just the people who are trying to save up for big goals.
