When companies compete for the business of consumers, consumers are often the winners. One company presents a new offer to win customers, and other companies have no choice but to follow suit if they want to compete. Companies within the credit card industry has been quick to respond to competing offers.

I’ve been following the credit card industry for several years now, and after a decrease in the value of rewards programs, the offers have once again started getting better, if slowly. Last year Discover launched a new version of their Discover More Card, offering consumers a 0% introductory APR on balance transfers for 18 months and on purchases for 6 months. The 18 month balance transfer period is equal to that of the Citi® Platinum® Select MasterCard®, in addition the Discover® More® Card – 18 Month Promotional Balance Transfer includes a few unique benefits.

Discover® More® Card – 18 Month Promotional Balance TransferIn addition to the 18 month balance transfer deal, Discover is offering what is becoming an industry-standard cash-back rewards program based on rotating categories. The combination of both offers is unique to a balance transfer credit card. The Discover More Card offers a rewards program tiered in the following amounts:

  • 5% Cashback Bonus on purchases in categories that change throughout the year up to the quarterly maximum. It’s free and easy to sign up.*
  • 0.25% cash back on all purchases for the first $3,000 spent.
  • 1% cash back on all purchases beyond the $3,000.

The balance transfer fee on the Discover More Card – 18 Month Promotional Balance Transfer is 3%, which means for every $100 you need to transfer, you’ll pay a fee of $3 (no maximum). Even with that fee, the 18 month period available for interest-free payments can save you hundreds or possibly thousands of dollars. This card has no annual fee.

This 18-month offer won’t be around forever. This deal was scheduled to expire earlier, but it has been extended due to its success. If a balance transfer is necessary to save you money, consider the Discover More Card – 18 Month Promotional Balance Transfer and its 0% introductory APR for 18 months on balance transfers.

I think Discover right now has another offer or another card that offers 12 month with no BT fee.

I just took advantage of that one. It felt great and should save me a few hundred dollars as I pay down the amount I transferred to the card. I already had a payment plan in place to get rid of the debt within a year, so its nice to be able to improve the plan by removing interest charges along the way. That offer for no BT fee ends sometime this month.
